Chocolate Overload

Last night we had our meeting for the November book, "The Actor and the Housewife," by Shannon Hale. Anne Bodily hosted for the evening, and she treated us all to a "healthy helping" of Claim Jumper's famous Chocolate Motherload Cake. Wow, was that good!! Great idea, Anne! It was well worth bombing my diet for the evening!

It was very fun to hear what everyone had to say about the book. It covers an interesting topic: Can a man and woman ever be best friends in a truly platonic relationship? There was a lot of interesting discussion on that idea, along with some entertaining, albeit not very surprising interpretation from some of our husbands on the matter! We had a lot of fun!

Those in attendance were: Anne Bodily, JoLyn Thompson, Amy Germer, Carrie Howell, Frances Collinwood, Caroline Rowe, Audrey Sisco, and myself.

December Book

In honor of Christmas, the book we will be reading for December will be "The Christmas Sweater," by Glenn Beck.

Here is a brief synopsis:

"When Eddie was twelve years old, all he wanted for Christmas was a bike. Although his life had gotten harder -- and money tighter -- since his father died and the family bakery closed...Eddie dreamed that somehow his mother would find a way to have his dream bike gleaming beside their modest Christmas tree that magical morning.

What he got from her instead was a sweater. "A stupid, handmade, ugly sweater" that young Eddie left in a crumpled ball in the corner of his room.

Scarred deeply by the realization that kids don't always get what they want, and too young to understand that he already owned life's most valuable treasures, that Christmas morning was the beginning of Eddie's dark and painful journey on the road to manhood. It will take wrestling with himself, his faith, and his family -- and the guidance of a mysterious neighbor named Russell -- to help Eddie find his path through the storm clouds of life and finally see the real significance of that simple gift his mother had crafted by hand with love in her heart.

Based on a deeply personal true story, The Christmas Sweater is a warm and poignant tale of family, faith and forgiveness that offers us a glimpse of our own lives -- while also making us question if we really know what's most important in them."

A "Frost"ed Night

Our Thursday night meeting was sure a lot of fun! We met at my house, where I supplied hot chocolate and two dozen gourmet doughnuts from the new Mill Creek bakery "Frost." We pigged out on all the yummy confectionary goods and enjoyed good company while sipping our piping hot chocolate!

We had fun discussing "Ender's Game." It was good to hear everyone else's take on the book. Plus, those who have read the sequels were able to tell us a little about them.

Those in attendance were: Carrie Howell, Laura Schilaty, Anne Bodily, Audrey Sisco, Susie Larson, Caroline Rowe, and myself. Thanks for a fun night, girls!!

November Book

Anne Bodily will be hosting for the month of November. She has selected to read "The Actor and the Housewife," by Shannon Hale. Here is a little synopsis of the book:

"A very different kind of fantasy from New York Times bestselling author Shannon Hale. What if you were to meet the number-one person on your laminated list—you know, that list you joke about with your significant other about which five celebrities you’d be allowed to run off with if ever given the chance? And of course since it’ll never happen it doesn’t matter…

Mormon housewife Becky Jack is seven months pregnant with her fourth child when she meets celebrity heartthrob Felix Callahan. Twelve hours, one elevator ride, and one alcohol-free dinner later, something has happened…though nothing has happened. It isn’t sexual. It isn’t even quite love. But a month later Felix shows up in Salt Lake City to visit and before they know what’s hit them, Felix and Becky are best friends. Really. Becky’s husband is pretty cool about it. Her children roll their eyes. Her neighbours gossip endlessly. But Felix and Becky have something special…something unusual, something completely impossible to sustain. Or is it? A magical story, The Actor and the Housewife explores what could happen when your not-so-secret celebrity crush walks right into real life and changes everything."

Catching Chinese

Last night we had our book club meeting to discuss "Catching Fire." We met at the Silver Dragon restaurant, and enjoyed Chinese food along with our discussion! It was a really great turnout! Everyone I have talked to has really enjoyed these "Hunger Games" books. The only complaint is that we have to wait another year for the final installment of the series!!!

We had a lot of fun discussing different parts of the book. We took a vote on who Katniss should end up with, Gale or Peeta. It was a tie! How the series will end, who will die, what the outcome will be, turned into a great conversation! It was also fun to compare notes on what really happened at the end of the book, since things moved so swiftly. It was great to get everyone else's take on it.

Overall, it was a great evening! The food was fabulous, and we were able to stay late into the night talking. I'm sure the whole staff was ready for us to go by the time we meandered out of there. We were the last customers in the place!

Those in attendance were: Carrie Howell, Anne Bodily, Audrey Sisco, Frances Collinwood, Laura Schilaty, and myself. Thanks for the great night, ladies!

Catching Fire Meeting

Book: "Catching Fire," by Suzanne Collins
Host: Amy Germer
Date: Friday, October 9th
Location and Time: To Be Announced

October Book

The book we will be reading for October is "Ender's Game," by Orson Scott Card. Here is a synopsis:

"In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training. Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister. Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender's two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives."

A Night at Alfy's

Last night we had such a great time at Book Club! We met at Alfy's Pizza and enjoyed the pizza and wonderful salad bar. It was great to talk about "To Kill a Mockingbird." Everyone really liked it. We also saw other friends from church eating at the restuarant. We had a lot of fun chatting with everyone and eating until the salad bar closed!

Those in attendance were Audrey Sisco, JoLyn Thompson, Anne Bodily, Laura Schilaty, and myself.

September Book

Amy Germer will be hosting for the month of September. She has chosen to read the next in the "Hunger Games" series: "Catching Fire," by Suzanne Collins. I am so excited to read it! I loved the "Hunger Games!"

Here's a brief synopsis of the book:

"Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge."

Mockingbird Meeting

Date: Friday, September 4th at 7:00 pm

Malls for Moms

August Book

For August we will be reading a true classic, "To Kill a Mockingbird," by Harper Lee. I read this book in high school, but I'm not sure if I really appreciated it at the time. I have since then read it several times, as an adult, and am truly touched everytime I do. It is very thought-provoking, bringing up the issue of race in the South during the Great Depression....

"A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father—a crusading local lawyer—risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime."

July's Meeting (in August -- Yeah, yeah, I know!)

Date: Friday, August 7th at 7:00 pm
Book: "Pride & Prejudice & Zombies," by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith
Host: Me, Myself, and I
Location: Alderwood Mall Food Court

Scheduling in July was turning into a nightmare, therefore we will be meeting on August 7th. I hope everyone is enjoying this book! I sure did! I can't wait to hear what all of you have to say about it!

July Book

For the month of July I chose a tongue-in-cheek version of my absolute favorite book -- "Pride and Prejudice." Hopefully you all won't be too alarmed when you see about this one, but I've heard rave reviews!! I am hoping to not be disappointed. Just remember not to take it too seriously! Ha ha!

"Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith:

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—& the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty & arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—& even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism & thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you'd actually want to read.

(I would change that to....something your husbands would actually want to read!)

Hosting "The Host"

Our book club meeting on Thursday was a lot of fun! We got to talk a lot about Meyers' book "The Host," as well as comparing it to her "Twilight" series. Overall we thought it was a very interesting novel about a very thought-provoking idea. Thanks to Caroline for HOSTING! Ha ha.

Those in attendance were: Caroline Rowe, Frances Collinwood, Carrie Howell, and myself.

June Book

Caroline Rowe will be hosting for the month of June. The book she has chosen to read is "The Host," by Stephenie Meyer. I know that quite a few of you have already read it, so you've got a head start! Caroline wanted everyone to be forewarned that "The Host" is nothing like the "Twilight" series. It is written for adults, so it doesn't move quite so fast or have the teenage angst associated with "Twilight." But, as always, Meyers is a fantastic story-teller. I'm sure we will all enjoy it!

Anne's Story

Last night was a lot of fun at Laura's house! I wish more of you could have come!

Laura Schilaty, Carrie Surowiec, and myself first met at Jamba Juice where we enjoyed a nice frozen concoction. Then Laura and myself wandered over to Laura's house, where we were soon joined by Caroline Rowe and Jolyn Thompson. We had a great evening discussing the book and just chatting in general. Everyone was so impressed with Anne Frank. Her life and her story is simply phenomenal. I was astounded at the level of sophistication in her writing style. I had to keep reminding myself that she was only thirteen years old when she started her diary. It is devastating to think of all the lives cut violently short during the Holocaust. Anne's story has truly touched countless people, which I am sure would be unfathomable for her to grasp.

May Book

Laura Schilaty will be hosting Book Club for the month of May. She has chosen to read, "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl," by Anne Frank. I haven't read this book since the ninth grade, so it will be really interesting to see what I think of it now, as compared to what I took from it as a young girl myself.

Girls' Night Out

We had a lot of fun at our April meeting! We met at the Olive Garden for dinner and conversation and were there late into the night! Good food, good company, and good conversation!

Everyone absolutely loved the book! There was a general concensus that we were a little hesitant to like it at first, given the subject matter (you know, that little issue of teenagers killing each other....) But we all agreed that once we got into it a little ways, there was no putting it down! Can't wait for the next book of the series due out in September! Thanks for the great book idea, Amy!

Those in attendance were: Lauren Hammond, JoLyn Thompson, Anne Bodily, Caroline Rowe, Robynn Stolte, and myself.

April Meeting

Host: Amy Germer
Book: "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins
Date: Thursday, April 30th at 8:00 pm
Location: Amy's house

Now that everyone is back from Spring Break, it's time to get together again! This month we will be meeting at Amy's house to discuss Collins' amazing book. I hope everyone has had the opportunity to read it. It is a fast, intense read, and I highly recommend it! I know there are several available copies floating around, so please let me know if you need one. There's still time!

Spring Break Read

Amy Germer will be hosting for this month's Book Club. She has chosen one of her favorite books, "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. It's based in a future post-apocolypse North America where there is a televised mandatory annual Hunger Games. These involve 24 teenagers chosen by lottery who must fight to the death until there is one surviving winner. It sounds like an intense and exciting read!

As we were trying to figure out a time that we can meet for March's meeting, we discovered how difficult it would be to manage at the end of the month, since it is Spring Break. We will therefore meet in April, after everyone is back from their great Spring Break adventures! This will also count for our April book as well.

Two Little Lonely Ladies

Due to almost everyone having something else going on that evening, we changed the night of Book Club to Friday the 27th. Unfortunately, that night didn't seem to work out any better!! There were only two little lonely ladies who went to Book Club this month. But I hear that Lauren and Audrey had a FABULOUS time without the rest of us!!!!

I hope next month is a little easier to schedule!

It's a story about a family of Baptist missionaries who travel to the Congo to do some missionary work, and the trials they face along the way. Lauren said it was an excellent novel and can't wait to hear what everyone else has to say about it!

Happy Reading!

Eleven Hungry Women....Watch Out!

We had such a great time at the Claim Jumper last night! The food was awesome, as usual! I think the highlight of the evening was seeing the expressions on the faces of those who haven't been there before when the servers brought out all the gigantic servings of dessert. It looked like each dessert could have fed an army! Thanks to everyone who came, it was a fantastic turnout!

Those in attendance were Susie Larson, Jolyn Thompson, Lauren Hammond, Amy Germer, Heidi Barker, Sarah Williams, Michelle Norlie, Anne Bodily, Carrie Howell, Audrey Sisco, and myself.

January Book

Wow! This holiday season has taken its toll on our Book Club meetings, but here I am again trying to get back into the groove of things!

I went ahead and decided I'd host this month since it is short notice and we need to get going on this month's book. I chose another of Shannon Hale's books, "Book of a Thousand Days." I know some of you have read it already or are currently reading it so I thought it might make for a convenient selection. Not to mention, I have become a big Shannon Hale fan!

Happy Reading and Happy New Year!
